What really sets Milton Keynes apart is just how easy it is to explore. The city’s famous grid road system, huge green spaces and more than 200 miles of traffic-free Redways make it one of the easiest places in the UK to explore by car, bike or on foot, which makes it feel completely different from most UK cities. Add in lakes, parks and family attractions around almost every corner and you’ll soon realise why so many people end up staying longer than they planned.

Things to do in Milton Keynes

If it’s your first visit, we’d start at Bletchley Park it’s one of the most important historic sites in Britain and the place where Alan Turing and his team famously cracked the German Enigma code during the Second World War. Even if history wasn’t top of your list before you arrived, it’s difficult not to leave with a real appreciation for the people whose work helped change the course of history. The interactive exhibitions, restored wartime buildings and original codebreaking huts bring those incredible stories to life in a way that’s both engaging and surprisingly moving. It’s the sort of place you’ll still be talking about on the journey home.

Ready for something completely different? Head over to Snozone at Xscape, where you’ll find real snow all year round. Whether you’re learning to ski, brushing up your snowboarding skills or simply racing down the slope on a toboggan, it’s one of those attractions that’s every bit as much fun for adults as it is for children. There’s even a restaurant overlooking the slopes where, hot chocolate in hand, you could almost convince yourself you’re in the Alps….well kind of!

If you’ve still got plenty of energy left, why not experience what it feels like to fly? iFLY Indoor Skydiving. You can experience the thrill of freefall without ever jumping out of a plane. Suitable for children aged four and over, it’s one of those attractions that makes everyone smile before they’ve even put the helmet on. After a quick safety briefing, you’ll float on a cushion of air inside the vertical wind tunnel while expert instructors help you master the basics. We weren’t expecting it to feel quite so realistic, but it’s easy to see why so many people leave wanting another go.

Adventure is something Milton Keynes has in abundance. If climbing is more your thing, don’t miss Go Ape at Woburn  just outside of Milton Keynes. With high ropes, zip lines and tree-top challenges, it’s a brilliant way to test your nerves while taking in views across the park. Whether you’re tackling the course as a family or just trying to beat your friends to the finish, it’s guaranteed to get the adrenaline pumping.

If you’re visiting with younger children, Gulliver’s Land is another brilliant option, offering rides and attractions designed especially for families with younger adventurers.

And if the weather decides not to cooperate, don’t worry. Xscape has you covered with bowling, crazy golf, cinemas, escape rooms and plenty more indoor activities to keep everyone entertained.

Time to Slow the Pace Down

One of the things we really like about Milton Keynes is how much green space there is. Despite its reputation as a modern city, you’ll find lakes, parks and woodland almost everywhere you look. Campbell Park is the perfect place to start. Stretching from the city centre towards the Grand Union Canal, it’s one of those parks that’s ideal for a leisurely stroll, a family picnic or simply sitting with a coffee while the children let off steam in the open spaces. Throughout the year it also hosts festivals, outdoor events and live performances, so there’s often something happening.

Just a few minutes away Willen Lake offers a completely different experience. Whether you’re hiring a paddleboard, trying out the inflatable Aqua Park, enjoying a lakeside walk or simply stopping for an ice cream while watching the water sports, it’s one of those places where you can happily spend half a day without running out of things to do.

And then there’s the Grand Union Canal, which quietly winds its way through the city. It’s easy to forget you’re in one of the UK’s newest cities as you watch narrowboats drift past, follow the waterside paths or stop at one of the canalside cafés for a bite to eat. One final tip from us? Don’t leave Milton Keynes without finding the famous Concrete Cows. Created in 1978 as a public art installation, they’ve become one of the city’s best-known landmarks and perfectly capture the quirky personality that sits behind Milton Keynes’ modern image.

After skiing, skydiving, paddleboarding and exploring, you’ll probably have worked up an appetite, and luckily Milton Keynes has quietly become one of the South East’s best places to eat. Thanks to its diverse community, you’ll find everything from award-winning gastropubs and stylish bistros to fantastic street food and international cuisine, so there’s something to suit every taste and budget.

If you’re looking for atmosphere, we’d head straight to The Hub MK, which is packed with restaurants, cafés and bars, it’s one of the city’s most popular places to eat and ideal for rounding off a busy day. Whether you’re in the mood for French cuisine at Brasserie Blanc a relaxed brunch or simply a drink in the sunshine, it’s one of those places that’s always buzzing.

One thing that really surprised us was Milton Keynes’ growing street food scene. Throughout the year you’ll find independent vendors appearing at markets, festivals and events across the city, serving everything from gourmet burgers and authentic Mexican food to Punjabi street food. If you’re lucky enough to catch Saf’s Kitchen while you’re visiting, it’s one of the local favourites worth looking out for.

If you’d prefer a slower pace, venture just outside the city into the surrounding villages where you’ll find some excellent country pubs and gastropubs serving seasonal British food. Places like The Swan at Salford and The Wavendon Arms have built fantastic reputations and are well worth the short drive if you’re turning your day out into a weekend away.
