Things to do in Sheffield

Start with the Winter Garden. It’s completely free to visit and home to one of the largest temperate glasshouses in the UK, with more than 2,500 plants from around the world. It’s one of those places that’s much bigger than you expect once you’re inside and somewhere you could happily while away an hour or two.

Once you’ve finished there, you’re only a few minutes from the Peace Gardens, which sit proudly in front of Sheffield’s impressive Gothic Town Hall. If you’re anything like us and enjoy a bit of history or architecture, it’s well worth slowing down for a look.

If you’ve still got some energy left, head over to Sheffield Botanical Gardens. Covering 19 acres, they’re one of those places that’s easy to underestimate until you’re wandering around them. You’ll find beautiful Victorian glass pavilions, a fascinating historic Bear Pit, peaceful gardens and even a fossil stump that’s around 310 million years old. It’s a lovely way to spend a couple of hours, especially on a sunny day.

If the weather isn’t on your side, don’t worry. Sheffield has plenty to keep everyone entertained indoors. Magna Science Adventure Centre is one of those attractions where children can spend hours exploring without even realising they’re learning.

Then you’ve got the Tropical Butterfly House, where you’ll find everything from colourful butterflies and birds of prey to meerkats, reptiles and even dinosaurs. It’s one of those attractions that’s difficult to leave without saying, “That was actually better than I expected.”

Then There’s Meadowhall…

Whether shopping is top of your list or you just fancy a break between attractions, Meadowhall is well worth a visit. As one of the UK’s largest shopping centres, you’ll find everything from high street favourites and designer brands to restaurants, cafés and entertainment. It’s one of those places where you pop in for an hour and suddenly realise it’s nearly time for tea.

The Cherry on Top of the Cake

One thing that catches a lot of people out is just how close Sheffield is to the Peak District, before you know it, you can be swapping city streets for rolling hills in no time at all. Fancy trying the famous Bakewell pudding? The Original Bakewell Pudding Shop is well worth the drive. Or maybe you’d rather stretch your legs with one of the Peak District’s best walks. Mam Tor and the Great Ridge never disappoint, especially on a clear day. Whether you fancy a gentle stroll, a proper hike or simply somewhere to sit with an ice cream and take in the view, this is one of the biggest reasons we think people end up turning a day trip into a weekend away.

Food, Glorious Food

You’ll probably have worked up an appetite by now, and luckily Sheffield doesn’t disappoint. Over the last few years the city has built a fantastic reputation for its independent restaurants, cafés and food halls, with Kelham Island becoming one of the best places in the city to grab a bite. Whether you’re after a quick coffee, a proper Sunday roast or somewhere to celebrate after a day of exploring, you’ll find plenty of choice.

One of the things we like most about Sheffield is that it doesn’t feel overly touristy. Many of the best places to eat are the same independent cafés and restaurants that locals recommend, and that’s always a good sign.
