Information about Derbyshire
Derbyshire is a county in the East Midlands of England. A large part of the Peak District National Park is to be found there. The north of the county features the bleak moorlands of the Peak District and the southern tip of the magnificent Penines, whilst the rolling countryside of the south is better known for its mining and engineering industries. Derbyshire’s county town is Derby, and other major towns include Chesterfield, Matlock and Buxton.
Prehistoric remains in the county include the important Paleolithic site at Creswell Crags and the early Bronze Age site Arber Low, near Youlgreave. The town of Buxton began as a Roman spa town called Aquae Armemetiae.
Derbyshire attracts many tourists because of its beautiful countryside particularly to the north, and it is also known for its many great houses which date from the 15th Century onward. These include Bolsover, Chatsworth, Haddon, Hardwick, Sudbury and Sutton Scarsdale. There are also many architecturally important small houses, and picturesque towns and villages.
