Information about London

London, the capital of England and the United Kingdom, is a 21st-century city with history stretching back to Roman times. At its centre stand the imposing Houses of Parliament, the iconic ‘Big Ben’ clock tower and Westminster Abbey, site of British monarch coronations. Across the Thames River, the London Eye observation wheel provides panoramic views of the South Bank cultural complex, and the entire city.

London is the capital and most populous city of England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames in the southeast of the island of Great Britain, London has been a major settlement for two millennia. It was founded by the Romans, who named it Londinium.

London is a leading global city in the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, professional services, research and development, tourism, and transportation. It has a diverse range of people and cultures, and more than 300 languages are spoken in the region.

London contains four World Heritage Sites: the Tower of London; Kew Gardens; the site comprising the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey, and St Margaret’s Church; and the historic settlement of Greenwich. Other famous landmarks include Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, Piccadilly Circus, St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, Trafalgar Square, and The Shard. London is home to numerous museums, galleries, libraries, sporting events, and other cultural institutions, including the British Museum, National Gallery, Natural History Museum, Tate Modern, British Library, and West End theatres. The London Underground is the oldest underground railway network in the world.

Visit London for royal hunting grounds, elegant Arts and Crafts-era suburbs and greenbelts of common land. There are endless thing to do in London. Get your bearings of Greater London on Westminster’s huge Ferris wheel, the London Eye. Greater London’s patchwork of boroughs sprawls out as far as its busy motorway ring road, the M25.

Hit northern districts famed for their gritty music scene, dog-walking heaths and celebrity-run restaurants. Head south for suburbia scattered with galleries, golf courses and shopping centres. The River Thames winds west for Richmond’s deer parks and east for Olympic stadiums and royal forests that once hid highwaymen.

London is one of the most famous cityscapes in the world, providing some of the most striking architecture, world class opera, film, theatre, street festivals, museums and art exhibitions.
